ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yannick Duhamel is a French sculptor who was born in Clermont-Ferrand in 1974, and who lives in Normandy. He is the first visual artist to sculpt and assemble vinyl records to achieve large compositions both visual and sound reminiscent of photography.

Drawing inspiration from the mixture of materials and arts, being part of these self-taught artists who let their creativity run free to invent a new art from scratch, he created the Duotone Vinyl art (art of vinyl in bicromy) in 2017.

Through his four dimension (width, height, depth, musicality) connected sculptures witch have a touch of elegant vintage nostalgia which is terribly trendy and timeless, Duhamel pays tribute to the golden age of the record and the great figures of popular music and film culture that have been inspiring and exciting him.

He self-made his musical education with his guitar in hand, in the shadow of his elders, and with the dream of following in the footsteps of the Anglo-Saxon groups that force his admiration. So, naturally, he embraced a first artistic career as a guitarist, composer and interpreter. At the age of 25 he was chosen by the great Ray Charles himself to ensure the first part of this French tour. Singing, writing, composing, then producing for the major labels of the music industry, he was awarded several gold records and travelled the world for fifteen years. Then one day the desire runs out of steam.

The return of flame, he knows it in 2015. Exalted by this saving freedom, Duhamel rediscovers himself through sculpture. As an evidence for this second career as a craftman, in search of the last innovations, he draws his inspiration through the material, the form, and the desire to move the lines between the arts. Under his skilful gestures, portraits of icons of music and cinema come back to life from the vinyls that he conscientiously choses, cuts by hand and then assembles to better dematerialize them. Sculpture and music are then one : the "Duotone Vinyl Art" is born.

As Joe Strummer leader of the group The Clash, once said : "each one must realize you do not have to cling to the past if you want to have any future". Duhamel is the most beautiful example of this.
